What is an ATS? ATS are Applicant Tracking Systems that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to parse your resume through their human resources/recruitment tracking program. When you apply on Indeed, LinkedIn, or the company website, and it asks to upload your resume, it is parsed through this AI system. According to JobScan, nearly 100% of Fortune 500’s uses some kind of ATS in their Hiring Process.

    CIVILIAN

Civilian resumes are considered “Civilian” when they are not being used to apply to any state, federal, or military-based position. If you have any plans to pursue Federal/Government Contracting, Bids, or apply to vacancies on USAJobs, a Civilian resume is NOT for you. All Civilian resumes are Applicant Tracking System (ATS) and Keyword Optimized. This means that they will pass through the ATS and not be automatically rejected. The keyword optimization comes from ensuring that your resume is geared toward the positions that you are applying to. Remember that your resume is meant to be written for your Target Audience, not for you. It is not in the first person for a reason, which is the Target Audience.

    FEDERAL

There is a stark difference between a Civilian resume and a Federal/Military resume, most considerably, that a Federal resume utilizes a very specific template and could be up to 10 pages of content (whereas a resume should be a maximum of 3). A federal resume must be geared toward open job vacancies/announcements in the federal/state/government space. This resume is keyword and USAJobs.gov optimized, ensuring the best placement and application.

    MILITARY

Federal and military resumes are similar, as they generally need to use the same type of template to apply for GS-level-based job vacancies. They are also similar in concept, as they are USAJobs.gov and keyword optimized. A large difference between the two, however, is that Military resumes are often built based on VMETs and other military-related documentation instead of an already crafted professional (civilian) resume. Military-to-Civilian resumes are even more challenging as they require de-militarizing and adjusting content, acronyms, job descriptions, position titles, and other military-based information, translating this information into the civilian world.
